The 22 fret necks I have dont touch the pickguard But yes you have to either loosen the neck or unscrew the pickup (if the pickup is pickguard mounted) to remove the pickguard But that's on a Strat With the controls on a metal plate like a Tele, I wonder if you cant just fish the pickguard out from under the neck overhang?
